Jay-Z was born Shawn Corey Carter on December 4, 1969 in New York City. He originally lived in Marcy Houses in Bed-Stuy. His father left the family when Jay-Z was 12 because he shot his brother in the shoulder for stealing jewellery.

Jay-Z was in a fued with Nas, another New York rapper, but they ended the fued in 2002.
